LAKSHMI
On account of the centenary of ANNA (TRS - 09.10.2008 to 08.10.2009), I have great pleasure in sharing with all of us the joyful, memorable and unforgettable feelings I had with my beloved ANNA from my childhood.
First, about Anna's birth as learnt from Amma :-
Anna was born on 09.10.1909 (Purattasi month, Ayilyam Star Ekadasi thithi) as a twin baby. The other baby girl born with anna did not survive long. The month, date and thithi are auspicious. I learnt from reading books that a person born on Ayilyam star will dominate the family. They will avoid entry of another talented person to the family and won't take daughter in law or son in law in the same star out of ego. But Anna has not done that and we have one more talented person Gowri Kirubanandan in our family.
The person born on Ekadasi will do transactions of huge money through out his life . It came true that he managed temples with lot of properties. It is needless to state that he never misused the position, but ended up spending money out of his pocket on most occasions for the temples. This has brought the divine blessings to the whole family till now.
My experiences :
1) Uppiliappankoil.
When I was studying fifth class in Uppliappankoil, Anna asked Amma whether all children had slept , since he wanted to go for night show. Immediately, I stood up from bed and said that I would also like to accompany. To avoid the other children waking up, Anna dragged me out and took me to the film named 'Town Bus'. I still relish having watched a late night show with beloved Anna. Whenever I happen to hear the song 'உனக்கு மட்டும் உனக்கு மட்டும் ரகசியம் சொல்வேன் ' , that incident flashes in my mind.
2) Idumbavanam :
Whenever we hear the 'jull jull' sound of the bullock cart in which Anna used to come home, we (me, Lalitha and Kiruba) used to rush to bed in fear, sometimes it might be as early as 6 PM. Only when Anna came near us after taking his food, we used to wake up. His voice calling "Vaduhanathan" , "Somu" still rings in my ears. They were the employees of the temple. We had other two assistants, who were brothers, with strange names 'Dolak' and 'Thaplai'. I used to go to all places of his postings along with Anna. The Idumbavanam Board High School was started with lot of involvement from Anna, who also arranged for Temple land for the school. The inauguration took place in frontage of our house which was the quarters with admission of children. Guess who was the Admission No. 1 ...., it was Lakshmi, daughter of T R Srinivasan. We left Idumbavanam in 1964 , if I remember right. Still I owe some money to the icewalla at the schoolgate. ( we left on 1st June 1964 - kiruba)
3) Gandhi Street T Nagar.
Anna's punctuality had never been Indian one. It will be 6.55 a.m, when he is before the mirror for shaving and 7.15 a.m when he has his food 'sudachuda'. Many times it was found later that salt or something was required in rasam or sambar. Anna would have left for Baluserry at Triplicane without saying anything. Anna worked for fifteen years after his retirement. Very few would fit in this category.
4) 13 Rajaji Street, Mambalam.
I passed PUC in 1966-67 wiht high second class and distinction in Chemistry. I was keen on doing MBBS. Anna told beloved Seenu Mama to get the relevant application form, knowing fully well that the education shall be very much out of our financial reach. Anna and Amma had to leave for Nagapatinam due to demise of Periappa Jageeswara Iyer. I was disappointed to come to know that Anna , when returned from Nagapatinam, had decided against my pursuing MBBS. Relatives had opined that making a daughter a doctor will pose problems for finding a suitable match and resultant huge expenses for the marriage. Already there are elder daughters to be married and the entire thing would simply be impossible financially. When all these were discussed, I shouted angrily 'You do not knowanything'. After that , many a times Anna used to come near me and say ', I don't know anything' putting up an innocent face. Now, I feel very guilty about the way I behaved. But, the decision of Anna in 1967, had helped in Ravi becoming Dr. Ravi. During Admissions in 1990, the state government added five marks to the candidates for MBBS course, if both of the parents were under graduates. That '+five' clinched the seat for Ravi.
I laugh at myself, when I recall that I was unwillingly practicing for short hand exam listening Ceylon Radio - 'சிரித்து சிரித்து என்னை சிறையிட்டாய் '. It is obvious I failed and bid the shorthand a good bye.
5) Anna Nagar.
The sound of Anna's Hawaii chappals always announce Anna's Arrival. The green border towel and Leo Coffee cloth bag were the invariable attire. Whenever Anna and Amma visit us , invariably they would like to return to Kiruba's house as early as possible. Once I was having high fever when they visited us. They stayed with us. On the next day of their arrival, I was walking to the toilet and Anna immediately suggested to Amma that they can return to KK Nagar, since I am walking and alright.
The last minutes.
Anna was admitted to Bharathi Raja hospital on 7th of December. On 9th, I told Anna that the result of Ravi's completing MRCP had come that day. I could feel that he tried to say something but was unable express. On 13th Doctor called me at 11.35 AM and informed that Anna passed away. Though we all know that the death spares none, we were sad. It had rained heavily and Chennai was flooded. Though the rain had stopped during the rituals, it rained for a few seconds while Anna was being taken away. Chittappa VSR remarked that the sky also shed tears in Anna's farewell.
